Modern yoga therapy can help with a wide range of conditions (from cardio-vascular diseases to mental health issues; neurological conditions, breathing disorders, support in cancer treatment, etc…). Yoga therapists have several years of education and 800hrs of specific training and, like anyone in the holistic therapies fieldāmust have knowledge of the conditions they are working with. I am trained to understand medical diagnostics, look at health conditions through a yoga therapy lense, as well as assess from a western medicine perspective.
The aim of Yoga Therapy is to promote good health for the person as a whole – the emphasis of this work may be towards the body, the mind, the emotions or a combination of these. A health problem may be primarily in one of these aspects, for example, back pain caused by poor posture. Yoga Therapy would then focus on working with the body and Yoga postures. If the back pain is exacerbated by stress, then including practices to help calm the mind, for example breathing techniques, will be very useful too. Yoga therapy uses yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation, relaxation and guided imagery to improve mental and physical health.
