Isobel is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist experience and training in Eating Disorders and 15 years’ experience in general Adult Mental Health. She has assessed and treated more than 250 clients with eating disorders.
As well as supporting people to recover from their eating disorder, she advises partners and parents in how to talk about and approach the problem.
How she works
From the outset, Isobel will work directly on the eating disorder symptoms you want to target and change. Within a couple of sessions she will clarify other important aspects so you can achieve lasting recovery. These could include:
- Improving low self–esteem
- Reducing depression and anxiety
- Using the need to be perfect to work for, rather than against you
- Standing up to your inner–critic
- Expressing anger safely
- Increasing your tolerance of negative emotions
- Empowering yourself in relationships.
Isobel works carefully with your barriers to change. Eating disorders are similar to addictions; part of us wants to end what we do, yet another part is ’resistant’ to change. You may have tried to eat normally, but the eating disorder often ’wins’ leaving you hopeless and powerless. This is because underneath the calorie counting and food planning, underneath the preoccupation with weight and shape, and the chaos of bingeing, eating disorders help us cope. So an early task in therapy is to understand what the eating disorder provides at a subtle level. Once we identify that crucial information, we know exactly the work we need to do. You will learn other ways of coping so you no longer need your eating disorder.
Her network
Isobel collaborates closely with leading eating disorder psychiatrists and dieticians at the Chelsea and Harley Street Eating Disorder service. She refers into this network if clients could benefit from a review of mood, anxiety or sleep symptoms or support from a specialist dietician.
She works out of comfortable consulting rooms in the West End and the City of London and offers Skype/phone sessions.
